How does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture is founded on the understanding that Qi (vital energy) circulates through a network of channels known as meridians, which connect the body’s organs and systems into a unified whole. When the flow of Qi becomes obstructed, deficient, or excessive, physiological harmony is disturbed, manifesting as pain or illness. By inserting fine, sterile needles into specific acupoints along these meridians, acupuncture seeks to restore the smooth and balanced movement of Qi, regulate Yin and Yang, and harmonize the visceral functions of the body.
The classical axiom “Bul Tong Zuk Tong, Tong Zuk Bul Tong” — “Where there is no flow, there is pain; where there is flow, there is no pain” — encapsulates the Taoist principle that health is the expression of unobstructed circulation, while disease arises from stagnation. This concept extends beyond the physical to encompass emotional and spiritual blockages, reflecting the holistic view that body, mind, and spirit are interdependent aspects of one continuum.
